Steady open on a Windows computer, showing the Today screen with its plant in full bloom, hung with lantern flowers, and 46 days clean from alcohol.
Steady's Today screen. Under a morning sky that says Good morning, a plant grows on the hills, in full bloom with glowing lantern flowers after 150 clean days. Below, it shows 46 days clean from alcohol, 14 days to the next milestone and a dot for each day this week.

Your plant

Watch one day at a time grow

Scroll slowly, and picture it as your own. Every day you don't use, your plant grows a little more.

  1. Day one

    A seed

It starts the day you decide. Nothing to prove yet: just a seed, and a choice you can make again tomorrow.

  2. One week

    A sprout

Seven days. Notice how the mornings feel. Your plant is noticing too.

  3. One month

    Its first bud

Thirty days of choosing it. Hard days counted too, because you got through them.

  4. Three months

    A lantern flower

The first lantern opens, and glows at night. By now you know you can do this.

  5. Six months

    A young tree

Imagine opening your phone and seeing this. Every lantern is a day you chose.

  6. One year

A strong tree, hung with lanterns

And it never shrinks. A slip won't undo it: it keeps everything it's grown, and so do you.

How it works

One calm place, for the hard days and the good ones

The Track screen for alcohol: a current run of 46 days inside a ring, 14 days to 60 days, 150 clean days in total and 5 urges ridden out.The urge toolkit, called Ride it out. Choices include call or message someone, play the tape forward, read my reasons, and set a 10-minute timer. The morning routine, with a ring showing 5 of 12 actions done today.Step 3 in Steady's own words, with an explanation in plain words and today's actions. The Support screen. It says call 999 if you're in danger, then shows a saved contact and UK helplines, including NHS 111 and Samaritans.
  1. 01

    Your days, counted kindly

See your days without using, your longest run and every milestone you reach. Call them clean, sober or substance-free. A slip is information, not a verdict, and your total never goes back to zero.

  2. 02

    When an urge hits

Urges rise and fall like a wave. The urge toolkit walks you through one, step by step: breathe first, then pick what helps. Play the tape forward, read your reasons, talk back to the urge, change what you're doing, start a 10-minute timer or call someone.

  3. 03

    Small steps, every day

Morning and evening routines to tick off, change and make your own. Every tick counts, and skipping one is fine.

  4. 04

    Your approach, your words

Twelve Step work in plain words, self-management tools, or both. Say God or Higher Power, and switch off what you don't use.

  5. 05

    Help, one tap away

Helplines for your country and your emergency number, on every screen of the app, even the lock screen.

For you

For the everyday part of recovery

Steady is a quiet place to keep track, plan your day and get through the hard moments. Use as much or as little of it as you like.

Clean days that only go up

Every day you don't use is counted, and kept. Your total only goes up, and milestones stay once you reach them. A slip is information, not a verdict, so there's never a "streak broken" screen.

An urge toolkit

An urge rises, peaks and passes, like a wave. When one comes, Steady walks you through it, one step at a time, with seven ways to ride it out. Afterwards, note how it went, and learn what helps you most.

  • Breathe with the circle
  • Play the tape forward
  • Read your own reasons
  • Talk back to the urge
  • Change what you're doing
  • A 10-minute timer
  • Call someone you trust

Try it now: breathe with the circle, in for 4 and out for 6.

Your plant, growing with you

Every clean day, it grows a little. A seed on day one, glowing lantern flowers by three months, a young tree by six. Check in each evening to water it. A slip won't undo it: it keeps everything it's grown.

Watch it grow

The Twelve Steps, in plain words

Work through the Steps one at a time, with today's actions and space for your own notes. Say God, Higher Power, or a word of your own.

Tools for when it's hard

Write your plan and your reasons, weigh up the pros and cons, and learn to talk back to the urge. Built on cognitive behavioural and motivational ideas.

Morning and evening routines

Small actions you repeat each day. Tick what you do, and skip what doesn't fit today. Every tick counts.

Support, one tap away

Your emergency number, helplines for your country and the people you trust, on every screen. Even on the lock screen.

Ten-second check-ins

Each evening: did you use today? It keeps your numbers right, and waters your plant. Log urges too, and look back at what helped.

Letters to your future self Steady Plus

Write to the person you're becoming. Why you started, what you hope for. Steady keeps it sealed until the day you choose, then gives it back to you.

Your year in recovery Steady Plus

A look back at the days you chose: clean days, urges ridden out, your best month. Save it as a picture that never says what you stopped.

Appointments

Your key worker, doctor or group, all in one place. Reminders only say "Appointment", so nothing private shows on your lock screen.

Plain safety information

If stopping something suddenly can be dangerous, Steady says so, and suggests you talk to a doctor first.

Your words, your way

Say clean, sober, substance-free, or just days. Choose your word for a Higher Power. Large text, a PIN, colour themes, and backups when you choose.

For family and friends

It belongs to them

Steady is private to the person using it. Their records stay on their own device, and Steady doesn't share them with anyone, including you. That's on purpose.

If you're worried about someone's drug use, you can call FRANK too, on 0300 123 6600.

Giving Steady as a gift

The free version costs nothing, so you can simply share this page. To give someone Steady Plus, get in touch at hello@lightkeeperstudio.co.uk, and we'll send you a licence key to pass on.

Privacy

What we never collect

Steady is private by default. It isn't a setting you have to find. It's how the app is built.

We never collect

  • Your name, email address or phone number
  • What you track, log or write
  • Your location or your contacts
  • How or when you use the app
  • Anything for adverts. There are none.

How it works instead

  • Everything you enter stays in Steady's own storage on your device.
  • No account, no analytics, no ads and no tracking. It works offline.
  • Backups are files you save yourself, wherever you choose.
  • A licence key is checked on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
  • Reminders only say "Morning routine", "Evening routine" or "Appointment".
  • Delete everything in Settings, and it's gone. We hold nothing, so there's nothing for us to delete.

A PIN locks the app. It doesn't encrypt your records, so keep your phone or computer locked too. This website has no cookies, analytics or tracking either. Read the privacy policy.

Questions

Questions people ask

Using Steady

Is Steady really private?

Yes. Everything you enter stays in Steady's own storage on your phone or computer. There's no account, and Steady doesn't send your records anywhere. Lightkeeper Studio never receives them and can't see them.

What happens if I slip?

You can log it if you want to. Your total clean days stay where they are, and so do your milestones. A slip is information, not a verdict.

Steady also shows some plain safety information, because tolerance drops quickly after a break.

Do I need the internet?

No. Steady works offline. You only need a connection to download it, or to open a website from inside it.

What if I lose my phone, or get a new one?

Your records are only on your device, so we can't get them back for you. Make a backup now and then, in Settings, and keep the file somewhere private. You can restore it on your new device.

An ordinary backup file isn't encrypted. With Steady Plus, Security+ locks a backup with a password, so it can't be opened without it. Opening a locked backup is always free.

Can my key worker, sponsor or family see my records?

Not unless you show them. Steady doesn't send anything to anyone, and that includes your service.

About Steady

What can I track?

Alcohol and other drugs, picked from a list or named in your own words, and anything else you want to step back from, such as gambling. Track more than one if you like, each with its own start date.

Steady's safety information is about alcohol and drugs.

Is Steady a medical app?

No. Steady supports recovery. It isn't medical treatment or a medical device, and it doesn't give medical advice.

Keep your doctor, drug and alcohol service, sponsor or recovery worker in the loop. Talk to a doctor before you stop or cut down alcohol or other drugs, because stopping some of them suddenly can be dangerous.

Is it part of AA, NA or SMART Recovery?

No. Steady is not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or SMART Recovery. You can use it alongside any fellowship or programme, or none. It describes the Steps in its own words.

Who can use Steady?

Adults aged 18 and over.

If you're under 18, you don't have to deal with this on your own. Childline is free, 24/7, for anyone under 19: call 0800 1111.

How do I get Steady Plus?

Buy it once, and you get a licence key. In Steady, go to Settings, then Licence, and paste it in. The key is checked on your device, and nothing is sent anywhere.

If your support service has given you a key, enter it the same way.

Which phones and computers does it work on?

Android phones and Windows computers. iPhone is coming later.

Is there a version for services?

Yes. Drug and alcohol services, treatment centres and recovery charities can give clients Steady Plus, with the service's own number in Support. See Steady for organisations.

Need help now?

You don't have to do this on your own. These services are free, and they're there for you.

In danger right now?

Call 999 if you or someone else is in danger, can't be woken, or has taken too much.
